Sputnik 50th Anniversary

As a child of the space age I have been following the coverage of the 50th anniversary of the launch of sputnik with interest though some of the coverage they trotted out on the 10 o’clock news last night was odd I noticed a couple glaring mistakes that the BBC’s science correspondent made. viz it was the booster that was visible from earth and the satellite was not polished to make its viable (it was to reduce the thermal heating load) – dont they know how to use wikipedia at the Beeb. 🙂

Google have a nice custom logo for today.

Also I wrote way back about the book rocket boys which is partially about the effect of the sputnik launch on a group of young boys – and how the launch of sputnik fired them to develop their own rockets. The author went on to work for NASA.
