Madchester 2.0 virtual awards ceremony May 24, 2007

The Big Chip Awards are doing a virtual awards ceremony in second life – they have a virtual Tony Wilson so he can simultaneously host the Big Chip Awards.

Interestingly enough some one I know is quoted in the snarky  register piece about it

chair of Manchester Digital Shaun Fensom said: “As far as we know this is a world first.”

Shaun was one of the founders of poptel a coop when I used to be a member . And Poptel had a certain ,Manchester workerist vibe to it and when I saw 24hour party people it sort of chimed with how poptel felt – apart from the bit with the guns AFAIK.

Haven’t worked at a company before or since that had its own in house rock band and had complaints  from the neighbors about band practice ?

Back to some more SEO stuff

Looks like that Google is going to be cracking down on the MFA Junk sites that some individuals use to game ad words are going to be shut down.

This is a good thing as a lot of the time  I see links to sites that are pure junk form these MFA junk sites. And I know that some ad words users are being put of by the low quality of goggles partner network - I was talking with one client about this just last week.

I found the story over here at JenSenses site.  Via thread watch.

It will be interesting to see what happens when i see whats happening ill post a longer article on our main work internet marketing blog.

Finaly come to a sort of descison on the replacement Heat Sink and fan you can read my rant on the rubbish stock intel HSF here

zalman 9700 HSF

I have narowed it down to a couple of Zalman HSF’s probaly the 9500 or its bigger brother the 9700 I wont go for the Nvida branded version of the HSF as the rest of the case leds are blue and it wouldnt match.

It will require a complete dismantaling of the PC but no pain no Gain.

—Update

Went for the 9500 as it was in stock at pc world - the 9700 would have been to over the top the 9500 is masive as it is.

Out of the blue a few weeks ago I got rung up by the AITC to ask if I would be interviewed about investing in investment trusts – of which I am a fan.

I did a phone interview later on that week by phone and the piece appeared in the Daily Mails Sunday edition and on the “this is money” website.

Originally I was slated for the Daily Telegraph which is the main finance section I read these days as the post belininer pages in the gruniad are not as good)

They also sent a photographer round to take some pics unfortunately the pictures they used didn’t show the company polo shirt  I had on so no free plug there.

Iv’e had several emails from friends asking if I have sold out ? maybe I ought to do an interview for the morning star to provide balance.

I also recommend the Zulu Principal books by Jim Slater and his Son  and books by Benjamin Graham (the guy who taught Warren Buffet)

USB Temperature Data Logger May 15, 2007

Saw an interesting USB gadget which might be useful for people building high end overclocked pc’s where managing temperature which is the main problem I am  having with my nforce 680i build.

Its a usb data logger which logs temperature - i thought you could install this inside the case using an internal usb header  and measure the internal temperature of the case and read off the temperature via USB. It also measures humidity so if your water cooler springs a leak you might be able to use the humidity measurement to detect this - though is suspect not before a catastrophic mb failure water and electricity not being a good mix :-)

USB Temperature Logger

Interesting little gadget – its  available  from atp here use full for gardeners in green houses to.

Fraking usless bloody stock Intel HSF! - New PC Build part 4 May 11, 2007

Arghhhhhh! usless bloody stock Intel HSF!

Has come unstuck so its a complete strip down with a better heat-sink/fan combo.  Thought it was to god to be true that I manged to get the damm Intel provided heat-sink to work.

Oh well good job I brought latest issue of custom pc today.

Why oh why couldn’t have intel come up with a better dam retaining system - the system shuttle used in there heat pipe system was so sweet ive obvisly been spoiled.

well cant do anything about this week end I am off to Milton keynes to help with my wargames clubs demmo game - we are doing a big viking raid game

New PC Build part 3 May 10, 2007

The PC is now initially built.

I had a lot of problems getting the stock INTEL heat sink to seat properly on the i680 board especially once its in the case – subsequently  I found that other’s have had the same problem and advise fitting the heat sink with the motherboard out of the case or using a different heat-sink

After a hiatus (I was feeling under the weather for a long time) last week end I finally managed to get the HSF to seat properly and not have the system go into thermal shut down.

The build went ok apart from the HSF problems - the SATA drives where tricky to get the cables in and I am pondering buying another 4 drives and having a raid 0 for system and a 4 disk raid 5 array for data/programs.

Its fairly stable I have  had a few driver crashes – but as I used a Linksys USB adaptor that gave me problems on another Nforce board I suspect its that.

The Antec 900 looks impressive when powered up the blue glow looks nice and the all the matte back case looks understated.

Next steps:

  • Sort out front panel USB/Fire-wire – there’s a few niggles with one of the USB front slots and the front audio doesn’t work (I may have disturbed this during the HSF re install.)
  • Install all the other stuff USB hubs and keyboards and Control surfaces
Install latest nvidia drivers and BIOS
  • Decide what to do about RAID
  • Possibly Install floppy (I brought a black one to match)
Possibly Install a Black DVD/RW drive.
  • Decide on sound card I have a Maudio delta 44 that I may reuse will look in sound control in MK to see what the options are.
  • Decide what to do with the baby mixer ime running out of chanels :-)
  • Decide if I want to buy speakers for the 8 channel sound
  • Reinstall XP when I have the RAID setup sorted and register it
